I'm kind of curious as to where the music in Everlong comes from. Someone care to tell me? I could identify some of the MIDIs, and I really liked quite a few of them, but I don't know where they originated from, so... Some are originals but mostly by unknown authors since they were Japanese in origin and I couldn't read the tags. Others are from the standard RTP. Then there's a few from commercial games. For example the Water Caverns music is actually the remix of Quick Man's theme used in Mega Man X 5, and the track in Dokkalfar's Cave is from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I'd like to have an all original high quality score, but that isn't possible at this time. A large problem is the mp3 format, which cannot be looped. Another is getting players to download a huge music package. I've been thinking about doing something like this as an optional addon after installing the game since MIDI quality can be very poor on some systems and a major turn off for players, but the looping thing is a serious hurdle. I would have to have songs fade out and then restart, which can be disruptive in itself.

Also, I know this is off-topic, but the inside of Solus Insula (where the Ultimate Weapon resides) reminds me of The Nexus in WoW, with the whole thin passageways and off to the side bright lights on the outside of the paths.

The inside of Solus Insula is actually a combination of the Chrono Trigger chipsets for the Black Omen and the Undersea Palace. Also I thought fiery dragon swords were form Guild Wars, not Wow. :P A few tracks, such as Erave's and Justin's, came from gamingw.net a long time ago. Most of the unknown author ones came from rpg wolfpack, a website that no longer exists, but I still have the original zips of tracks backed up. Many of the originals I do know the author for were free samples by Zack Parrish who is apparently still around: www.zackparrish.com/main.phpThe Dark Lich battle theme was done by Zack for example. I can go through your list one by one and tell you where each came from (if I remember correctly, this was years ago). Battle 01 - rpg wolfpack Boss 04 - rpg wolfpack Boss 14 - this came from another rpg maker game, I cannot remember the title Boss 11 - rpg wolfpack Castle 01 - rpg wolfpack Castle 04 - rpg wolfpack Cave 01 - rpg wolfpack Cave 02 - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night rip Cave 03 - Zack Parrish, but I changed the instruments Cirigoth Theme - rpg wolfpack Dungeon 06 - rpg wolfpack Dungeon 09 - rpg wolfpack Expirius Theme - rpg wolfpack Fear 02 - justin @ gamingw Fear 06 - rpg wolfpack Forest 02 - rpg wolfpack Forest 05 - rpg wolfpack Mountain 01 - rpg wolfpack Secret - rpg wolfpack Siege 02 - Ghost @ gamingw Siege 03 - Ghost @ gamingw Temple 01 - Zack Parrish Tower 02 - rpg wolfpack Town 05 - rpg wolfpack Town 06 - rpg wolfpack Town 13 - rpg wolfpack Town 16 - rpg wolfpack Town 22 - rpg wolfpack Valiantide Theme - rpg wolfpack Vanguard 01- rpg wolfpack Victory 01 - rpg wolfpack Victory 03 - rpg wolfpack World Map - rpg wolfpack

I would love very much so to use some of this music, but whenever I think about it, I can't help but get the feeling that whoever plays it (myself included) will get a "Pfft, you took this straight from Everlong" feeling.

I would love very much so to use some of this music, but whenever I think about it, I can't help but get the feeling that whoever plays it (myself included) will get a "Pfft, you took this straight from Everlong" feeling. Well, I'm sure other people have used the same tracks in other games, perhaps in even better known RPG Maker games, so it's not like Everlong has a monopoly on its music (except for the one track by Mark Datysgeld which is original). I do know what you mean, though. I recently played a Neverwinter Nights module that used tons of music from commercial games. When I entered a forest and heard the Guardia woods theme from Chrono Trigger I was not happy. It causes a complete disconnect for the player since they already associate that music with another game. This module also used other tracks I am sure were from other commercial games, but I did not recognize them, and really liked them despite hating the use of known tracks. So it really has to do with exposure from the player's point of view. I'm not sure how remixes would enter into this, since they use the same melodies but can sound entirely fresh due to new instrumentation or style.

Remixes can have two effects... 1) make the song feel unique enough to boost the games originality OR 2) give the player a nagging feeling of "where in the nine hells have I heard this one before" and detract from gameplay.
It's a mixed bag, really.

If you were to make an optional MP3 package, i'd definitely download it.
Also, I'd like to know where these originated from. Battle 02 Battle 03 Boss 05 Boss 06 Boss 07 Boss 09 Boss 13 Boss 23 Briefing 01 Dungeon 03 Dungeon 04 Dungeon 11 Dungeon 12 Forest 03 (I know its a Secret of Mana Pure Lands remix, but I'm still curious) Siege 01 Tower 04 Town 03 Town 04 Town 09 Town 17 Town 19 Town 21 Vanguard 02 Victory 02
... If it is easier, list every song's origin.

Battle 02 - RPG wolfpack Battle 03 - RPG wolfpack Boss 05 - original by Zefax Boss 06 - RPG wolfpack Boss 07 - RPG wolfpack Boss 09 - RPG wolfpack Boss 13 - from Rogue Spear (Rainbow Six 2) intro move, James Brown composer Boss 23 - RPG wolfpack Briefing 01 - RPG wolfpack Dungeon 03 - standard RPG Maker 2k(3) RTP midi Dungeon 04 - RPG wolfpack Dungeon 11 - Zack Parrish Dungeon 12 - RPG wolfpack Forest 03 - probably taken from vgmusic.com, original Secret of Mana Pure Land Forest Siege 01 - RPG wolfpack Tower 04 - RPG wolfpack Town 03 - RPG wolfpack, has same theme as one of the mountain themes and the dungeon track for Progidium Nidus, so I suspect all three were by the same author and might be from some other (Japanese) game, or at least part of a set Town 04 - RPG wolfpack Town 09 - RPG wolfpack Town 17 - RPG wolfpack Town 19 - RPG wolfpack Town 21 - RPG wolfpack Vanguard 02 - standard RPG Maker 2k3 only RTP midi Victory 02 - RPG wolfpack Vehicle 01 - RPG wolfpack Vehicle 03 - RPG wolfpack
Again, those RPG wolfpack ones just came in giant zips with no hint of authors 99% of the time. Some of the midis had tags but they were in broken eastern script and I couldn't even translate them (mostly just useless symbols written into the tags, not because I didn't have eastern languages pack to display them correctly). So there's no way to know who those authors are or credit them, but I'm assuming most were by the Japanese RPG Maker community. You can still find new midis being posted by them at the firstseed forums.
